GEO held a back-to-school potluck to start off the new academic year with a bit of community-building. Between twenty and thirty union members stopped by to share a meal with one another and to say hello to people they had not seen since the previous semester.
We also spoke with a number of graduate workers who have been uninvolved with our union, but who had questions about our organization. We learned that misinformation is being spread by West Campus administrators about the ramifications of our new contract, including blaming the union for fees imposed on students by University leadership. Our productive conversation led to plans to hold a town hall event on West Campus some time this semester.
On the same day, members of the Bargaining Team celebrated the full ratification of the 2026-2030 GEO Contract.
In the wake of the contract fight, we look forward to a new year of organizing and building worker consciousness. While collective bargaining is an important part of GEO’s mission, it is not our only or even our most important reason for being. We need to continue to push for a sanctuary campus, build solidarity with other unions and organizations on campus and throughout the city, and fight the University leadership’s agenda of austerity and bureaucracy wherever it manifests.
