Leadership Elections Coming Up!
March 20th, 2024
As we are moving towards the end of the semester, it is time for our annual GEO elections! Thank you to everyone who voted in the recent election for the RA Bargaining Committee. In this upcoming election, we will be selecting our ‘24-25 Steering Committee (SC), the Bargaining Committee (BC) for our next full contract (for TAs, GAs, and RAs alike), and any delegates to send to the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT’s) annual convention which will take place in Houston from July 22-25.
We are now accepting nominations for (5) Bargaining Committee members and all Steering Committee positions. These SC positions are: (2) Co-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, Grievance Chair, Chief Steward, Organizing Chair, Communications Chair, and Outreach Chair. The BC comprises 5 committee members, including 1 Chair (who will also sit on the Steering Committee).
Notes:
It is possible to run for any position as a Co-Chairs. This intention must be made clear to the Election Committee prior to the election as these co-chairs will run together as a single line on the ballot.
Members may be nominated for multiple SC positions but may only accept the nomination for one. They may additionally accept a nomination for one BC position and/or a position as a delegate for the AFT convention if they desire. Members may run for a BC position if they have already been elected to the RA BC.
Self nominations are welcomed! If you nominate someone else, we will reach out to them individually to confirm their interest and clarify which position(s) they would like to run for.
Members of the BC should expect a 2-year time commitment, from ‘24-’26 as they prepare for bargaining to continue past our contract expiration in the Fall of ‘25.
A maximum of 6 delegates can go to the AFT convention. Funding will be determined by how many delegates choose to attend.
There will be a virtual "Kick-off Meeting" at 6pm on Mon 4/8 where candidates will be given the opportunity to speak and answer questions from voters. The election will begin directly after the meeting and run Mon 4/8 - Wed 4/10 via online secret ballot. To be eligible to vote you must be a TA, GA, or RA and have signed a GEO membership card—if you’re not a member, you can sign your card here.
The nomination form is linked HERE.
