GEO's Statement on the Chicago Mayoral Election

March 29th, 2023

Next Tuesday, April 4th, Chicago will be electing its next mayor. Democracy is a core principle of GEO: we believe you should have a say in the matters that affect your life, and voting is a way to do that. We encourage you to vote in every election, but this election is especially important.

Fortunately, it’s easy and convenient to vote on campus at UIC. You can vote on-campus, any day of the week, no matter where in Chicago you live. You can vote in Student Center East, room 613, Monday through Friday 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00am-4:00pm until April 4th. On April 4th, you can vote in SCE 613 6:00am-7:00pm. If you’re on campus, you can go vote right now.

Turnout is going to determine the winner of this election. Brandon Johnson is a former CPS teacher and current Cook County Commissioner. He has the backing of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the Chicago Teachers Union, and our very own UIC United Faculty. Paul Vallas is a former CEO of CPS and school district administrator across the country, notably overseeing the complete transition of the New Orleans school district from unionized public schools to non-unionized charter schools in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Vallas is endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police. You can read more about their policy positions here.
